What a spectacular month on The Nonlinear Life. Thank you for reading, liking, and commenting! And for getting feisty as we tackled some of the more challenging questions of summer: Who makes the best corn chip? What happened to the top sheet? Why do some schools start in August and others in September? Here are four of our most contentious pieces of the month as decided by readers like you!
This question has baffled me for years—and it turns out it baffles you, too. The real reason surprised me, however. It has nothing to with farming, air conditioning, or football.
Back home we started school in September and finished end of June. we had two weeks off around Christmas and one week starting at spring. I think starting school in mid august doesn’t help the kids that don’t like school. - Sonia Marlene Silva
We just moved from a charter school which had more days off to public school that has significantly less days off. I can’t stand starting school in August. IT’s so hot here in CA and yes I agree, I think the heat makes it hard for children to learn. I also think it’s sad that schools have to base a start day around standardized testing. Even starting in the last week of August might make sense. - Kerry Starzyk
2. 3 Things I Learned About a Better Life from 3 Weeks in Greece
My family's three-week sojourn to Greece was a highlight of our summer. I'm so grateful this piece resonated with readers.
I love this, thanks!! - Vicky Leffew Gold
Inspiring reminding what is truly possible. - Kelly Karlson
3. We Tried 25 Brands of Corn Chips. Here’s the Best One
My family's annual slurpoff featured corn chips this year. The results were spicy. We ranked chips in a variety of categories—white/yellow, colored, and flavored. One popular store ranked at the bottom of the bag.
Juanita’s weren’t included in this lineup, and they’re by far the best store brand tortilla chip. If you see them, grab a bag! - Jessica Sandfort
4. How Millennials Killed the Top Sheet
Our second-biggest piece ever. You had THOUGHTS on this divisive issue of top sheet versus no top sheet, which seemed to be drawn across generational lines. Your views on whether sleeping directly underneath a duvet is ick or A-okay were fun to read:
To be completely honest, I am 51 and HATE top sheets. They are scratchy and cold! I use a fluffy blanket directly against my sensitive skin. And, if you didn’t already know, because of the material that most sheets are made of, if you put the sheet on top of your blanket, you will stay much warmer than if the sheet is against your skin where its traditionally supposed to be. Personally, I think people should make (or not make) their beds however they like and in a way that allows them to be most comfortable, in and out of bed! - Andrea Turk
As an elder millennial, I can’t sleep without a top sheet. Who is going to mess with washing a duvet cover or comforter 1x a week. I sleep with a weighted blanket so it’s really not practical to clean all the time. I’m not a neat freak at all but not having one just feels dirty. - Hilary Hartje
My daughter lives in Scotland and went to ikea to buy sheets and they only offered the fitted one, also tried to order trough Amazon UK and the same happened, then my daughter told me it’s an English thing. - Liora Polichuk
That's a wrap on this summer. We hope you're gearing up for pumpkin spice latte season and getting ready for another month of content from the Nonlinear Life team. We can't wait to see you in the comments in September!
